Three Ways To Get Started On Your Holistic Wellness Journey Today

Uncategorized Jan 19, 2022

Last week I wrote about why holistic wellness is so important for your overall health. If you haven't seen it go back and read it! But now I want to share with you how to get started with holistic wellness.

It can seem a little overwhelming at first.

"You mean to tell me I have to do ALL THE THINGS?!"

Yes and no.

All the things don't have to take a ton of time or be these big giant life changes. It's not about stopping everything cold turkey and suddenly you have this amazing and healthy life. That is not feasible or realistic.

The idea with any change in your life or any commitment is to make it attainable. If you have never worked out and are mainly sedentary saying you're going to work out 5-6 days a week may not be a super appealing goal even if you feel like that's the goal you have to set.

Remember, this is your journey. You don't have to set goals that make you feel like you're punishing yourself or make you hate yourself or the activity that you're doing.

You're doing this out of self-love. And loving yourself starts with treating your body with the same respect and love you'd give to a spouse, a pet or your child. You have one body in this life, one mind in this life, one soul in this life so you may as well love them!

I always want love to be the focus of your journey. I don't say a lot of "you must do this" type of suggestions but this is one time I will. Loving yourself must be your main goal, your main intention, your main priority.

So, with that being said, let's start!

What are three ways to get started on your holistic wellness journey TODAY?

1. Start looking more into holistic wellness & acknowledge the interconnection of the different domains

With any new journey you embark on there is always a learning curve. I started with just picking up self-help or personal development books (books are how I learn best but you can find the information in other ways too) and be an active learner.

But the most important thing to understand about holistic wellness is that while the domains seem separate from each other every action you take also has a symbiotic relationship with other areas of your body and other domains of wellness. For example, there is a lot of evidence that suggests that exercise isn't just good for your physical body but also for your mind and mental health as well, and I can confirm this! I exercise for my mental health as well. As well, meditation is a great way to reduce stress. Stress can often lead to sleep issues, weight gain, mental illness and overall fatigue. So, meditation can help with all of those areas.

This is important to acknowledge otherwise it can seem like you set 20 different goals and then you're left feeling overwhelmed and end up doing none of them.

2. Learn about the various domains and set goals & then action steps for each

Learning about the different domains of health is extremely important. We often will remember the main domains and then leave out the other ones that we don't always think of such as relationships, finance, and work.

We then want to go about setting goals. I know a lot of people don't love goals so you can call them whatever feels right for you but having a guide for this journey is honestly really helpful.

I suggest starting with taking inventory of the overarching issues or struggles you face (or the areas that you'd like to commit more to). Instead of having a goal like "I want to meditate 5 times a week" try asking yourself why you want to have that goal. What in your life will meditating help with? It might be stress. So you'd want your overarching goal to be related to reducing your stress.

Once you have a few then you'll create action steps to support each of these. That's where you can add things like "meditate 4 times a week" or "go for a walk 5 times a week," etc. Your overarching goals will be more long-term (maybe even lifelong) and the action steps are the habits you're going to implement that support achieving that goal.

3. Hire a mentor to help support you through this beautiful journey

And the thing that helped me start my journey the best was hiring a mentor. I worked with a health coach for a little over a year and it was great. I learned a lot from her and the accountability in implementing the things I desired was so valuable.

Once things became habit they got easier but she really helped me get over the hump between having to rely on my willpower and motivation and an ingrained habit.

There are a lot of coaches out there that can help you reach your goals and it's important to find one that aligns with your values, that teaches things you can get on board with, and that you feel you can trust.

Trust is a huge key to the success of a coaching relationship. If you cannot have trust or gain trust in your coach you won't make as much progress. Coaching is a very vulnerable process so you need to be able to open up to them. But I believe there is someone out there for everyone so do a little exploring.

This journey is such an important journey you're able to embark on and I'm so proud of you for desiring to do it.

When you invest time in yourself you then show up as the best version of yourself. The best version of yourself is what you deserve in life and what the people in your life also deserve.

You've got this. Keep going!
